How to Engrave Stone Slate?
Posted by Joey Weng on
Introduction
Engraving stone is a fantastic way to create unique gifts or decorative pieces for your home. With the right tools and techniques, you can easily engrave intricate designs into stone slate. In this blog, we will provide you with a detailed, step-by-step process to help you get started.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Clean the Stone Slate

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the stone slate. Use a damp cloth or a soft brush to remove any dirt and debris. Ensure that the stone is completely dry before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Paint the Stone Slate (Optional)

If your design requires more contrast, consider painting the stone. A coat of black paint can enhance the depth and definition of your engraving, making your design stand out.
Step 3: Prepare the Laser Engraver

Next, place the stone under the laser engraver. For this guide, we choose the NEJE 5 Mini Laser with the E40 Module for optimal results.
Step 4: Adjust the Settings

For black stone coasters, use an image with a black background to optimize engraving results. Invert the image so that the areas to be engraved appear black, ensuring the desired effect is achieved with clear contrast. For simple patterns or text, directly set the laser to engrave the filled design.

Then adjust the laser settings as follows:
- Speed: 3500 mm/min
- Power: 50%
- DPI: 318
- Negative Image: On (If you already invert your image, then turn off this.)
(If you are using the E80, you can choose 9000mm/min, 40%power.)
Step 5: Begin the Engraving Process

Activate the framing feature to ensure the laser head follows the correct path. Double-check the engraving area to confirm that everything is set up correctly before starting the actual engraving.
Step 6: Review the Final Result

Once the engraving is complete, you can clearly see the contrast between the painted(Left) and unpainted stone slate(Right), and you can see that the painted slabs achieve a more striking appearance.
Other Stone Types Suitable for Laser Engraving
1.Cobblestone
Cobblestones, despite their hardness, can be shallowly engraved using a diode laser module. The engraving's contrast varies based on the cobblestone's color. For lighter-colored stones, adding a coloring agent, as recommended for slate, enhances visibility.

(Speed:400mm/min, Power: 95%, Passes: 4, Z Step Per Pass 0.2mm, Air Assist: On)
2.Granite
Granite, known for its durability and aesthetic appeal, is harder than cobblestone but well-suited for laser engraving. Darker granite varieties, such as black granite, provide superior contrast, making them ideal for creating striking engravings.

Conclusion
With just a few clicks, you can create intricate designs in a matter of minutes. Whether you're looking to craft a unique gift or explore your artistic side, NEJE laser engraver can help you achieve stunning results.
